This paper will give a glimpse on the debates around postmodern architecture in late socialist Poland ca. 1976-1989, a time when the country was characterised by economic hardship and growing popular protests against the socialist regime.
During this period theoretical debates around the built environment were increasingly allowed to flourish. International postmodernism was productively discussed and connected to an open criticism of functionalism in architecture and planning, a domestic discourse on “national architecture,” and conservationist theory related to the Polish school of historic conservation and their expanded view of historic authenticity.
This paper argues that the interplay of international and domestic influences account for several distinctive features of Polish postmodern architecture: a yearning for spirituality and a “deeper truth” beyond scientific rationality, a concern with national identity, and a search for meaningful urban spaces in response to the unsatisfactory panel-built housing complexes.
The debates over Polish postmodernism, therefore, exemplifies the mechanisms of selective cultural exchange across the Iron Curtain, as well as the leeway for transnational debate under an authoritarian system in decline.
